The Fondation Internationale Gabon Eco-Tourisme “Giuseppe Vassallo” (FIGET) was created in Libreville in May 2000, upon request of the Gabonese Government, to protect the primary forest in the Ipassa-Migouli-Ivindo. In February 2001 the FIGET was entrusted with 120 square kilometres of forest, the “Mingouli Protected Area". This is now part of the Ivindo National Park, which was created in 2002. FIGET's programmes are carried out in partnership with the Fondazione Trust the Forest.
FIGET's main purpose is:
- To assist the Gabonese Administration in preserving the tropical forests of the region along the Ivindo river, between Makokou and the Mingouli waterfalls, within the Ivindo National Park;
- To promote environmentally friendly tourism, which provides sustainable income to local populations without endangering their natural heritage, the forest;
- To promote social and economic development of local communities.
Board of Directors of FIGET: Marcel Ibinga-Magwangu (President); Francis Hallé (Vice President); Gustavo Gandini (Director); Brainforest-Gabon, represented by Marc Ona Essangui; Clemente Nicolucci; Armando Bilardo; Francesco Rocca; Green Management Institute, represented by Francesco Bertolini; Jean Pierre Mengwang; Jean Firmin Koumazock; Endangered Species Project, represented by Samuel LaBudde; Michael Moussa.
